The first thing that you need to learn in this self absorbed selfish material world is that the art of marketing something that you launch so heavily that people from all walks get up from their filthy chairs and take a good look at what you have done!!!!!! Phew… That was close. Promotion, marketing, advertising…….. these are some words that go hand in hand with the product or the idea that is being launched in the market! If you do not promote your site properly, take that thought of getting good rankings out of your mind. There are a hundred other aspiring businessmen like you who are doing a better job.
The only way to kill the competition is by promoting the website so fiercely that when a man thinks of doing a search about something and types the words in a search engine, your website should be right at the top. Submit your links to the Yahoo directory. That should be a good first way to start things. Now I think that at least all the media related sites would definitely benefit from this move. As mentioned in the previous comment about all the shells and stuff, if all these so called shells that you have designed are good, then you can simply submit all of them independently. This would again be a sort of masterstroke.
The topics should provide your site with good rankings courtesy the density that would be generated by the inter-related words. These keywords would help you pull lots of content developers whose work usually involves a great deal of research. Keep posting new stuff all the time so that these content developers and other customers keep coming all the time and become permanent visitors. Remember, since you yourself belong to the same fraternity keeps you at an advantage as you must be knowing what works with them and what does not.
Keep posting new releases all the time and start distributing these various URLs through publications and information sheets so that you reach a wider audience. Target all sorts of customer base and never limit yourself to a particular target audience. You never know the people behind whom your business might get a boost. You can also do a check on different referrals from other websites. Submit this to the search engine, say Google. And yes, just keep working like hell to make your site better and better.
