What does the Alexa ranking mean?

Anyone know exactly what this alexa ranking means? It claims to make traffic predictions on all of my websites traffic which is totally inaccurate.

Sometimes it shows 10 times more hits then I received and other times it shows nothing.

They collect all there data through there Alexa tool bar which only a small sampled selection of internet users install into there browser.

Alexa’s is more useful to get a rough idea of where your traffic levels sit relative to other websites.

Most of the Alexa mainstream data retrieval comes from US internet users. So if the majority of your website traffic comes from Australia, Alexa will say you have a monthly traffic score of zero.

Secondly most of the demographic that install’s Alexa are more savvy internet users. They would have to have a reason for wanting to install it in the first place, probably webmaster’s wanting to evaluate different website traffic statistics. This starts to veer away from the mainstream internet users with a bias sampling selection.
